The last couple of weeks at the allotment have involved construction. The post before this one details the building of a shed. Today we built a fence.

The fence that was in place was in a sorry state. At some point in the past, a previous allotmenteer had planted Ivy to grow along it, it’s the sort of thing people do. Some time ago I started to clear the Ivy away, but the damage was done.

It took a while to get the ground ready to properly accept the fence posts, the Ivy roots ran quite deep, and other horrors waited for us, some fibre glass panels had been sunk in vertically along the fence line. As we couldn’t removed them they had to be broken at strategic points, to get the posts in. Postcrete was used to secure the posts, a five minute setting time meant we had to work quickly.

As with the post placement, a string line was used to guide placement of the pickets, a spacer was used to keep a constant gap between each of these timbers.

We had intended to finish treating the timber before completing the construction, but an accident with the preserver container meant we couldn’t do that, but we’re happy that we can get it done before poor weather presents a problem.
