I had a conversion earlier this week with a man who is a few years older than I.
“We have had the best lives,” he said, ” those who came before us, had war, sickness, and poverty. Those who come after us, have a world which is dying, run by billionaires who don’t care about anything but money, and their own goals.”
I’m not sure he’s entierly right, but I am certain that i wouldn’t want to be a young person right now.
When I was growing up the domestic effects of the 2nd World War had diminished, America was mostly not invading places, and although the cold war was on, it would not last forever. It seemed llike humanity was walking, somewhat haltingly, toward a brighter future.
As a young un’ I played out with friends with minimal, if any supervision. Childhood diseases were oon the run, or erradicated, thanks to vaccines, Health and Safety was something we’d never heard of, and we learned from our mistakes. It wasn’t all excitement, adventure, and really wild things, but it was damn close.
This is a somewhat simplistic, rose-tinted, but not wildly inaccurate view of my time growing up, and I stand by the assertion that the times I grew up in were in fact optimal.
